–Each company use their own private protocol.

Although the Qi standard specification is also supported, there are many private protocol wireless charging standards on the market. Such as Apple 7.5W, XiaoMi 7.5W, Huawei 10W, SONY 9W, Samsung 10W, etc. Each company build their own protocol. They are not compatible. Resulting in increased cost of consumers to buy accessories.

Qi wireless charging specification

WPC is the first industry standard organization for wireless power and is the maker of “Qi” specifications. There are so far more than 500 members worldwide, including Apple, Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, Haier and other domestic and international famous enterprises. Ms. YuShuang used to be the Marketing Director of the IEEE Standards Association. The WPC sets a normative industry standard for 15W low-power applications. The purpose of this standard is to achieve interoperability between various charging boards and portable devices. Products that have been certified by the WPC Consortium will be identified with the words “Qi” and the terminals with “Qi” may be charged on all charging boards marked with the logo. The annual fee for joining WPC ranges from US$5,000 to US$25,000. Only joining the WPC Wireless Charging Alliance can earn Qi certification.

The significance of Qi wireless charging specification

Qi is a mature and open standards specification. It designed to help consumers use the most advanced technologies. Qi-certified products need to pass compatibility and safety tests. Qi’s Logo is a symbol of compatibility and safety. Different brands of products, as long as there is a Qi logo, the wireless charger can be used to charge. The series test verifies that the charger is compatible with other Qi phones. At the same time, it can ensure that the product is safe and reliable, and can prevent injuries and prevent equipment damage (heating of coins, damage to mobile phones, damage to NFC cards) and so on.

2017-2018 the number of the WPC’s members

According to new statistics, as of April 2018, the number of WPC members has increased to around 530. There were only 251 WPC members when Apple’s new iPhone was powered by wireless charging last September. But now the number of members has doubled. This showed us the fiery level of the wireless charging market.

Wireless charging is undoubtedly a hot topic in this year’s technology industry. After the Apple iPhone 8/X adopts the wireless charging function, several big companies in the Android camp have started to follow suit. Some companies even have wireless fast charging technology. In fact, many mobile phones have been equipped with wireless charging technology since the commercial use. The researchers learned from WPC’s official website that the number of the latest Qi-certified mobile phones of the WPC Wireless Charging Alliance is nearly as many as 60 models.

It can be seen that the latest Qi-approved mobile phones announced by the WPC have already reached a considerable scale. There will be more and more terminal devices supporting wireless charging. The wireless charging infrastructure in public places will gradually form a scale. A future without power charging constraints will soon come.

Qi standard specification private

iPhone

Apple 7.5W:

The iPhone 8/X is fully supported wireless charging. It compatible with 5W charging on the market and it also carries a private 7.5W wireless charging protocol. Apple claims that it can be achieved with the Apple AirPower wireless charger or a third-party authorized wireless charger.

Xiaomi

XiaoMi 7.5W

The XiaoMi released the Snapdragon 845 mobile phone MIX 2S. Which is equipped with a 7.5W wireless charging. Also released with the mobile phone is the XiaoMi wireless charger, which comes with an exclusive version of the mobile phone. Whos  price is RMB99 yuan. It is Qi Certified and supports the MIX 2S wireless fast charge (7.5W). It also supports wireless charging for iPhone 8/X and other mobiles.

HUAWEI

HUAWEI 10W

Huawei new product launch conference launched the P20 series of new mobiles. It includes Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro, and Huawei Mate RS Porsche. The Mate RS Porsche supports wireless charging. The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro do not support it. Huawei Mate RS Porsche is equipped with 10W wireless charging. Yu Chengdong stated at the press conference that the charging speed is 80% faster than Apple iPhone X wireless charging.

sony

SONY 9W:

Sony XZ2 series finally joined the wireless charging function. Also brings a new wireless charger – Sony wireless charging station (WCH20). It supports the Qi wireless charging standard and supports both horizontal and vertical use modes. USB-C input and 9W wireless charging power.

samsung

SAMSUNG 10W:

Samsung is almost the only big brand that insists on implementing wireless charging. Up to now, there are as many as 20 models of Samsung handsets equipped with this function. It is expected that the next models will continue to support this function. The models include Samsung S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge, Note5, Note6, Note7, S8, S8+, Note8, S9, and S9+. Their wireless charging power is 10W.

Qi needs to unify and Standardization more

According to the table of Qi-certified wireless charging mobile phones, the wireless charging protocols are different in various mobile phone brands. Such as Apple 7.5W, Xiaomi 7.5W, Huawei 10W, SONY 9W, Samsung 10W, etc. This means that although Qi-certified devices have good compatibility and wireless chargers can normally charge mobile devices, they may only support ordinary 5W and cannot achieve fast wireless charging. This will undoubtedly increase consumers’ buying costs.

In fact, the current status is similar to the previous wired fast-charging industry: various fast-charging protocols stand alone and incompatible with each other, such as QC fast charge, Samsung AFC, Huawei FCP/SCP fast charge, MediaTek MTK fast charge, VOC/Dash flash charge, USB PD fast charge and so on. This leads to the fact that users can only use the specified charger to achieve fast charging. Adding a lot of trouble to the customer. Wired fast charging has just emerged as a sign of the USB PD unified market, and wireless fast charging has begun to embark on its own path. This closed industry phenomenon is clearly not a healthy development trend.
